Just by the nature of our physiology, women are more vulnerable to attack than men. Men have larger bones, more muscle mass and are typically more aggressive than women. Therefore, women benefit from the principles taught in martial art training. Understanding the principles of balance, leverage, distance control, along with many others, give a woman the tools needed to protect themselves in an attack.
Trauma-Sensitive Training
Having an awareness that a student may have already been a victim of an attack or have a strong fear of a male attack against them, I teach with a sensitivity to the trauma or fear a student may experience. As such, I feel it can be more comfortable for a woman to begin her training with other female students until she feels ready to join an open class that would be co-ed.
The grappling arts can feel very confining, leading to a sense of panic, especially if her partner were to be a physically imposing male. Training with other women as you learn the principles and techniques on the ground is a great way to begin your martial art journey. As your instructor, I will encourage you to speak up if you feel any discomfort and need some time and space to regroup.
Growth Beyond the Mat
Learning to overcome your fears and grow in your self-awareness is one of the greatest benefits of training. Classes should challenge you mentally and physically but, at the same time, be fun. The more the student enjoys the training, the more likely they are to continue.
I want my students to feel a sense of personal growth as, over time, they expand their comfort zone both in their classes and in their lives. Knowing that you have the tools you need to defend yourself in an attack can help to remove fears that you may carry. Trusting your instructor and fellow students is the first step in addressing your vulnerabilities.
How to Get Started
